Dozens of supporters of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Cory Voorhis turned out Saturday to raise money to help pay for his growing legal expenses.
Voorhis, 39, was charged with three misdemeanors for improperly accessing a criminal information database and passing along the information to Bob Beauprez’s 2006 gubernatorial campaign.
The fundraiser was the fifth that’s been held for the agent. Supporters gathered in a parking lot at Gunsmoke Gunsmithing Inc. in Wheat Ridge where they donated money and enjoyed a barbecue meal.
So far about $35,000 has been raised, but Voorhis’ legal bills have climbed to $250,000, supporters said.
The immigration agent is on unpaid leave from his Immigration and Customs Enforcement job pending the outcome of his federal trial.
The married father of two children is struggling financially, supporters said.
“He mortgaged his house; that’s all he has left,” said Mike Riebau, a spokesman for Voorhis’ legal-defense fund and retired ICE agent who said he mentored Voorhis.
“With the weight of federal and state government on his back, it’s an absolute crime,” Riebau said. “Everything’s on the line this week with his trial.”
Voorhis, who attended the event, wouldn’t comment on his court case but was grateful to the dozens of motorcycle enthusiasts, friends and family who turned out to support him.
“It’s inspirational. It’s wonderful and I’m speechless,” Voorhis said. “It uplifts my soul.”
