Getting your player ready...

Every year at the home opener, they say this could be the year. And last year they were right.

Said Mayor John Hickenlooper then, “I think they’re going to surprise a lot of people. Eighty-two to 84 wins and take the back door to the playoffs.”

Not bad. We had 90 wins.

Hick was on hand again Friday for the 2008 opener. He joined a few hundred VIPs at the annual pregame picnic hosted by the Rockies.

This year Hick predicted 88 wins. Gov. Bill Ritter says 89 to 93 wins “because I’m more optimistic than the mayor.”

The gang included people who have never missed an opening day since this all started in 1993: Susan Kiely, Dealin’ Doug Moreland, Mike Rosen, Michael Geller.

Also spotted among the hot dogs, shrimp and beer at the celebration of spring, baseball and new beginnings: Tom Strickland, Senate hopeful Mark Udall, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, milkmen Dick and Eddie Robinson, Tom Shane, former CSU coach Sonny Lubick, Linda Alvarado, Fox Sports Net’s Bob Thompson, Kelli McGannon, Steve Chotin, Steve Sander, Wendy Aiello & Walt DeHaven, Mike Boyle.

Roughing it.

Jamie Korngold is the Adventure Rabbi. She’ll lead you spiritually — into the wild.

Korngold heads up a program in Boulder and is out with a book, “God in the Wilderness.” Her mission is to connect us to God through Shabbat skiing and Rosh Hashanah hiking.

Some people, she says, are surprised to find Jewish people so involved in the wilderness. You know, all those jokes about roughing it and slow room service.

Says Korngold, “Countless people say, ‘Wow, I didn’t know there were so many people like me, so many Jewish people who are into the outdoors.’ ”

She’ll be at the Tattered Cover LoDo at 7:30 p.m. April 23. So make the hike.

Mama Mia!

Brooke Wall is one hot mama.

The Highlands Ranch mother of two boys has just launched her website, , which sells Hot Mom and Maternity Tees & Tanks. Take a gander.

“I designed some shirts for myself when I was pregnant,” Wall says. “I wanted to let people know I was pregnant, not just wear some tent. And people started noticing them so I thought, ‘Why aren’t I selling these? Especially in Highlands Ranch?’ ”

The slogans on the Tees are funny and sexy, she says, but not over-the-top. Among the logos: SHOW OFF, BUN IN THE OVEN, HOT MOM, SOCCER MOM, HOUSEWIFE (not so desperate), ROCKER MOM, JUST CALL ME MOMMY.

City spirit.
