Ilija Gajic’s unassisted goal with 40 seconds remaining gave the University of Denver men’s lacrosse team a 9-8 victory over No. 7-ranked Notre Dame on Saturday in Bridgeview, Ill. It was the Great Western Lacrosse League opener for the Pioneers (7-4, 1-0).
“These guys never gave up today, even when we were down 6-1,” DU coach Jamie Munro said. “This team has shown a fight all season and today it paid off.”
Gajic’s goal resulted in DU’s only lead of the game against the Fighting Irish (7-2, 1-1). Jamie Lincoln led the Pioneers with three goals. Cliff Smith added two.
Pomona alum powers Nebraska.
Nick Sullivan, a junior left fielder from Pomona High School, hit a three-run homer in No. 9 Nebraska’s 5-2 victory over visiting Texas Tech.
In his last 19 games, Sullivan is hitting .395 and has driven in 17 runs. Nebraska improved to 23-4-1 overall and 9-1-1 in the Big 12.
Pioneers defeat Ducks.
Megan Carver’s game-high five points (three goals and two assists) helped the DU women’s lacrosse team upset No. 18 Oregon 13-12 in Eugene, Ore. The Pioneers (7-5, 1-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) got three goals from Ali Flury.
Lakers drop Karl to D-League.
The Los Angeles Lakers moved rookie guard Coby Karl, son of Nuggets coach George Karl, to their NBA D-League team, the L.A. D-Fenders. It will be Karl’s third stint with the D-Fenders this season. He has appeared in 17 games for the Lakers, averaging 1.8 points and 4.2 minutes.
