As I read the sports section in last Sunday’s Post, I reflected that newspaper coverage of college sports could use a little Title IX of its own.
Title IX made an enormous difference in improving the opportunities for women in college sports. Colleges are required to provide similar sports opportunities for both men and women. During the month of March, your newspaper has been full of stories about men’s basketball, but women’s basketball is very much an afterthought.
Yesterday’s paper had four pages of coverage about the men’s games played and 1/4 of a page about the women. There are exciting stories, interesting athletes and great games taking place in the women’s tournament, also. I would love to see some decent coverage of the events.

Will Shanny get a pass?
The firing of [Broncos GM Ted] Sundquist was nothing more than a power play, plain and simple. [Coach Mike Shanahan] has [owner Pat] Bowlen in his hip pocket and Bowlen doesn’t even realize it. If the defense failed, it was Bates’ fault. Poor draft selections, it was Sundquist’s fault. It’s Shanahan’s bat and ball now. No more excuses for poor first- or second-round busts. Let’s see if the media still treats him with kid gloves.
