CASTLE ROCK — The Douglas County Planning Commission heard comments for the second straight week concerning its comprehensive master plan that if approved could allow for up to 11,000 new homes.

Like last week, about 350 people showed up to comment, most about the controversial plan to build the homes on 5,100 acres on the property known as Sterling Ranch, south of Chatfield Reservoir and held by about 18 landowners.

The master plan would change the property’s designation to urban, which would allow for residential and retail.

Those who favor the Sterling Ranch project say the area needs more infrastructure, such as roads, water and sewer. Opponents say it would bring more congestion to an area already running low on water. The commission will probably debate and vote on the plan at its next meeting this month.
