Getting your player ready...

Let’s get one thing clear straight out of the box: Sanuk doesn’t make shoes. The company makes sandals that just happen to look a heck of a lot like shoes, but aren’t. They’re called Sidewalk Surfers (MSRP: $48 to $60), and they’re making quite a splash.

Born out of the belief that most modern footwear is plagued by too much foam, gel, air cells, gizmos and gadgets that promote overall foot weakness and lead to injuries, Sanuk’s Sidewalk Surfer sandals feature “Barefoot Un-technology,” a patented, deconstructed design that attaches a shoe upper to a sandal footbed. The result is a comfortable pair of kicks that allow your feet to bend and flex the way nature intended, without disclosing your toes.

The surfer sandals have picked up a pair of awards for innovation this year, and founder Jeff Kelley intends to expand the already extensive summer line to include cold-weather styles this fall.
