Someone deflated the tires on 120 Colorado Springs school buses parked behind a chain-link fence at a bus yard, delaying the start of class for about 21,000 students today.
Academy School District 20 postponed classes for two hours to give parents time to get their kids to school, said district spokeswoman Nanette Anderson.
No delays are expected this afternoon, she said.
“This has happened before,” Anderson said of the vandalism. But the last occurrence was more than 11 years ago.
Police said the air was let out of the front tires.
Police consider the situation “suspicious” but aren’t calling it vandalism because that requires estimating a dollar value of the damage, said a representative at the Stetson Hills police substation.
The bus yard at Woodmen Road and Duryea Drive, is surrounded by a 6-foot chain-link fence, but it isn’t topped with razor wire, Anderson said.
The district has about 21,000 students attending classes in five high schools, five middle schools and 18 elementary schools.
