AUGUSTA, GA. — The fog that shrouded Augusta National Golf Club earlier this morning lifted, Arnold Palmer struck the ceremonial opening shot and after a one-hour delay, play began in the 2008 Masters.
Of course, as far as many golf fans were concerned, play didn’t begin until Tiger Woods did. The world’s top-ranked player, in search of the first-ever Grand Slam in professional golf, was at even par through his first five holes.
Leading the way at this point is Luke Donald. The Englishman was at 3-under-par through six holes. Actually, the leaderboard was populated with relatively short hitters, something of a surprise given how long the course had played earlier in the week. Trailing Donald was defending champion Zach Johnson, Heath Slocum, Brian Bateman and Steve Flesch, all at 2-under.
