MONTROSE, Colo.—A 2-year-old boy is dead after authorities say he fell into a septic tank in rural Montrose County.

Sheriff Rick Dunlap says the boy was discovered missing at about 7 p.m. Sunday. Family members and neighbors looked for him for about an hour without success, and informed authorities the boy was missing.

As emergency crews responded, the boy was found in water and was unresponsive.

Searchers and sheriff’s deputies performed CPR on the boy, who was then transported to a hospital. The child was pronounced dead a short time later.

Dunlap says it’s unclear why or how the lid to the tank was removed.
