PUEBLO, Colo.—Construction has begun at the site of a complex where crews will neutralize a stockpile of chemical weapons stored in Pueblo.
The federal government has planned to destroy about 780,000 mortar rounds and artillery shells at the site for years, but the project has been delayed.
Sandy Romero, a spokeswoman for contractor Bechtel National Inc., says work has begun on a facility that will process mustard agent contained in some of the shells.
Construction of the Agent Processing Building is expected to take until 2011, with several more years required to test the facility before chemical processing begins.
