WASHINGTON — United Airlines asked federal regulators for a one-year delay in starting flights between San Francisco and China because of soaring jet-fuel prices and a slowing economy.

Service to Guangzhou, China, was to be added June 18, and return flights were to begin June 20, United spokesman Jeff Kovick said Monday in an e-mail. Instead, Chicago- based United wants authority to begin the service by June 30, 2009.
