Jeriel Chalk, a 17-year-old home-schooled student from Johnstown, has won “best in show” for the second straight year in a statewide Junior Duck Stamp Contest.

Chalk’s ink-washed depiction of a northern pintail took top honors over 400 other entries in the contest sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Her work will represent Colorado at the national competition in Washington, D.C., at the end of the month.

Last year, Chalk won the state’s best-in-show award over nearly 600 entries with her rendition of a gadwall.

The federal junior duck-stamp design program is intended to teach students about waterfowl and habitat conservation. Entries from Colorado were judged by a panel of waterfowl enthusiasts, biologists and professional visual and wildlife artists.
