BOULDER, Colo.—A Louisville mother is being ordered to spend 16 years in prison for failing to prevent injuries that led to the death of her 10-week-old son.

District Judge Lael Montgomery handed down the sentence Thursday to 29-year-old Molly Midyette.

A jury convicted her in December on a charge of child abuse resulting in death. Prosecutors said she waited too long to get medical care for her son, Jason, who died in March 2006.

Earlier this week, she lost her bid for a new trial. She had asked for her conviction to be thrown out and to get a new trial on the grounds that her husband and his family and bullied her.

Her husband, 28-year-old Alex Midyette, is scheduled to stand trial later this year.
