Crowley County officials Friday night said the Colorado Bureau of Investigation’s preliminary findings indicate that this week’s fire that burned 8,900 acres was caused by two insufficiently extinquished controlled burns that rekindled.
Although the fires were human caused, there was no evidence of any intentional criminal acts.
Strong winds contributed to the fire’s rapid spread, the CBI determined. During the blaze, two firefighters died as their truck went into a ravine beneath a burned-out bridge.
Meanwhile, Fort Carson officials said this afternoon that a wildfire on the base is now 75 percent contained. The cause of that fire is undetermined.
