At CU-Boulder to receive the 2008 Wallace Stegner Award from the Center of the American West, Arizona native and former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was asked to give her opinion on state supreme court judicial selection methods.
Notably pleased to be asked the question, she responded that she was involved in drafting a plan that led to Arizona’s adoption of a merit-based judicial appointment process — a process Colorado also uses. Prior to the change, Arizona had elected judges through partisan elections, which she described as “contentious and expensive,” and “not a good system.”
