COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn says he will circulate petitions to get on the primary ballot for re-election rather than go through the GOP’s El Paso County convention.

Lamborn said this week he’s not convinced county party officials can handle convention well enough.

The first-term congressman won the nomination in 2006 by less than 1,000 votes over Jeff Crank.

Crank is running for the nomination again this year, as is retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Bentley Rayburn.

Crank criticized Lamborn’s decision, saying the incumbent doesn’t have the support of the rank and file Republicans.

El Paso County GOP Executive Director Nathan Fisk defended the party’s administration.
