University of Denver sophomore Stephanie Sherlock fired a final-round, 7-under-par 65 on Wednesday in Muscle Shoals, Ala., setting a conference record for 54 holes with a score of 208 to win the Sun Belt women’s golf championship for the second straight year.
Sherlock, who made seven birdies in the final round in a career-best round, finished 8-under, 10 shots in front of second-place Paula Hurtado of Florida International. Denver’s Katie Kempter tied for fourth at 4-over 220.
The Pioneers cruised to the team title for the fifth year in a row, posting an 8-over 872 total to finish 42 shots ahead of second-place Arkansas-Little Rock.
• Jenny Henderson’s 14th-place finish (at 15-over 231) led Northern Colorado to a sixth-place finish at the Big Sky women’s golf championship in Phoenix. Hannah Bews of Portland State won the individual title at 4-over 220, and Portland State won the team title.
DU men win Sun Belt.
Denver’s Daniel Wax finished in second place after a final-round, 2-under 70, and teammate Espen Kofstad was two shots back in fourth place in leading the Pioneers to the SBC men’s golf championship team title in Muscle Shoals.
DU’s 11-under 853 was one shot better than second- place New Orleans. It was the DU men’s first conference golf title. South Alabama’s Johnny Caldwell won the individual title with a three-round, 11-under 205 total. Wax was second at 207. Kofstad had a 209 total.
Eagles advance to CHL finals.
Seth Leonard, Ryan Tobler and Scott Polaski scored to give the Colorado Eagles a 3-0 lead, and goalie Sebastien Laplante and the defense held on for a 3-2 win over the Texas Brahmas in Game 7 of the Central Hockey League Northern Conference finals in Loveland.
Laplante stopped 35-of-37 shots. The Eagles will play the winner of the Southern Conference series, either Arizona or Laredo, in the Ray Miron Cup Finals.
Mammoth schedule changed.
The Colorado Mammoth’s final regular-season game has been changed, from Friday night to Saturday at 1 p.m. in San Jose, Calif. The Mammoth and San Jose Stealth will be playing for the National Lacrosse League West Division title.
