Getting your player ready...

While fast times are never a gimme, independent triathlete types can at least take control of their philanthropic destiny at Sunday’s Tri for Your Cause early-season event at Boulder Reservoir (5565 51st St., Boulder).

Each participant in the 500-meter swim, 17-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile running race gets to select the nonprofit organization where 75 percent or more of his or her entry fee will be donated. (All money not spent on race production is donated, although the final percentage depends upon the total number of participants.) Individual racers can register until Friday for $75, and teams can sign up for $95 (add $10 if you are not a USAT member).

A second, slightly longer race is scheduled for Sept. 6, and $10 discounts are being offered for those who sign up before the end of the week. Racing gets underway at 9 a.m.
