Julius Stinson, Wyoming’s first-team all-Mountain West cornerback, suffered a freak accident Thursday, two days before the NFL draft. Stinson was working out when he went up for a pass, came down and ruptured his Achilles tendon.

Stinson was hoping to be a low-round draft pick or to sign a free-agent contract.

The Cowboys had two free-agent signees, both with San Diego. Second-team all-MWC tight end Wade Bet-schart and punter-kicker Billy Vinnedge signed with the Chargers.

Meanwhile, Colorado running back Hugh Charles, who averaged 5.3 yards per carry for 989 yards rushing and eight touchdowns, will try out for a contract this weekend at the Cleveland Browns’ minicamp.

Air Force linebackers John Rabold and Drew Fowler and MWC offensive player of the year Chad Hall were still waiting Monday for offers. Their chances could be hurt by the NFL cutting its camp roster size from 88 to 80 players and their minimum two-year military commitment.
