HERE — They call Cleveland the Mistake by the Lake. That must make Denver the Wreck in the Rockies.
Or maybe you haven’t checked out the fortunes of the local pro sports franchises in recent weeks.
The Nuggets were swept in four games by the Lakers. The Avs were swept in four games by the Red Wings. And the Rockies, who were swept in four games by the Red Sox last October, are flirting with last place in the National League West.
True Tulowitzki, who almost singled-handedly revived the Rockies franchise last fall, is on the disabled list with a torn left quadriceps. Jay Cutler was just diagnosed with the most serious type of diabetes. And Peter Forsberg spent most of the Red Wings series watching, not playing.
Oh, and did I mention that Manny Corpas has lost his closer job? Or that Franklin Morales and Jayson Nix have been demoted and Brad Hawpe had one home run in April?
What’s that? Yeah, yeah, I know, it’s depressing enough around here, given the state of the economy and the price of gas. But sports are supposed to be our escape, our diversion, our temporary respite from all of life’s harsh realities.
Instead, the state of the local teams may be the harshest reality of them all. Not that all of their cases are lost.
