WELD COUNTY — Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck needs additional time to investigate allegations that Fort Collins police Officer Jim Broderick violated the law when he assembled the now-vacated murder case against Tim Masters.
Previously, Buck had planned to disclose his findings last week, but more interviews and research into new leads are required before reaching a decision whether to prosecute Broderick, his office announced Friday.
“We have been unable to interview a key witness in this investigation,” according to a statement that said it could be at least three weeks before the source is available for questioning.
Attorneys for Masters, whose conviction for Peggy Hettrick’s 1987 murder was reversed by Larimer County authorities in January, sought the independent investigation. They contended, among other issues, that Broderick may have perjured himself when he testified in 1998 that he was not involved in a 1988 surveillance operation of Masters.
