As expected, considerable numbers of fish perished under the ice at Antero Reservoir. The extent of the kill won’t be known until Colorado Division of Wildlife officials set nets, probably during the week of May 12.
“We have to give the lake a chance to settle down before we sample the fishery,” Greg Gerlich, aquatic chief for the Colorado Division of Wildlife, said of a process that involves extensive net sampling.
Gerlich said he was aware a large number of dead trout had been sighted, mostly along the dam.
“With the sort of winter conditions we had, it doesn’t surprise me one bit,” Gerlich said. “You can see the dead fish, but you don’t see the ones still out there swimming around. We have to see what’s left, then make an assessment.”
