Mick Delaney, a 14-year assistant coach under Sonny Lubick at Colorado State, was hired as running backs coach at Montana, Grizzlies coach Bobby Hauck said.

“Mick has been a friend and colleague for many years,” Hauck said. “He is an outstanding addition to our staff. To bring someone onboard with his experience is a real plus for us. Certainly his ties to the state of Montana run strong and deep.”

Delaney rejoins Montana nearly 40 years after starting his college coaching career there. He was a Grizzlies assistant in 1968-69.

Originally from Butte, Montana, Delaney moved to Colorado State in 1993 after two seasons as head coach at Western Montana College. He has been coaching in the collegiate ranks for 26 years.

Under Delaney’s direction, CSU produced some of its best running backs, including Doak Walker Award finalist and first-team all-Mountain West player Cecil Sapp, in 2000.

Delaney’s college coaching career:

1993-2007 Colorado State; running backs coach

1991-92 Western Montana College; head coach

1983-85 Montana Tech; athletic director

1976-80 Montana State; assistant coach

1968-69 Montana; assistant coach
