After 12 seasons and five National Lacrosse League championships, Colorado Mammoth assistant captain Pat Coyle, a former defensive player of the year, is retiring. Coyle made his decision final Wednesday after talking with Mammoth general manager Steve Govett.
“For four years on this team he was a great leader and was the anchor of our defense,” Govett said. “He provided a lot of insight for the coaching staff and was invaluable to our players.”
Coyle’s loss is only the first of several changes in the aftermath of Colorado’s 15-13 playoff loss last week to visiting Calgary.
“Losing in the first round of the playoffs is unacceptable,” Govett said. “And it has happened twice in a row.”
The Mammoth will lose a player to Boston via the expansion draft and there might be losses related to the fate of the Arizona franchise. One thing that won’t change, Govett said, is Bob McMahon’s position as head coach. — Theresa Smith
