In what might be a happy surprise for high school seniors from across the nation, Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania plan to offer admission to 90 students on their respective wait lists, and Harvard might take 150 or more.

The ripples from the offers will likely send other highly selective colleges deeper into their waiting lists, as well.

It is unusual for the most selective colleges to go this deep, college officials say. They cite changes in early-admissions programs and the broad expansion of financial aid.
