DENVER—A Denver police officer has been arrested on a second-degree assault charge after being accused of using excessive force against a 16-year-old boy.
Officer Charles Porter was arrested Thursday. He’s accused of using excessive force against a teen who suffered a lacerated liver, kidney injuries and broken ribs in an April 18 incident.
Porter, 40, a member of the department’s gang bureau, was suspended without pay. He has declined comment.
Lt. Ronald Saunier said an investigation is continuing.
The Denver chapter of the Latino Peace Officers Association, composed of more than 80 police officers, asked Police Chief Gerry Whitman to turn the case over to the FBI for investigation of possible civil-rights violations.
