Operating against rain, hail, snow, wind and cold, all of big schools’ championship series play Saturday was shifted to All-City Stadium and it lasted well into the night.

Earlier, Arapahoe won two elimination games, 10-6 over Continental League rival Chaparral and 8-5 over Jefferson County power Dakota Ridge. Cherry Creek recorded a 13-6 victory over Grand Junction with a 15-hit attack, including a home run by Jon Shoutta. The Bruins next met Air Academy late for the right to join next weekend’s semifinalists.

Class 4A

The classification’s Northern League, so strong throughout 2008, has advanced Skyline and Fossil Ridge, which won twice by shutout. In addition, the city’s Thomas Jefferson is the lone 3-0 team of the remaining four, including Saturday’s victory over Skyline, and Jefferson County’s Ralston Valley eliminated the Northern’s Niwot.

Class 3A

Regular powers Eaton and Erie advancing to the final four is status quo considering the era. However, the resurgence of Lamar, which ousted defending champion Faith Christian, adds to the balance of the midrange level, and Brush is in despite its 13-11 record.

Class 2A

Traditional powers Custer County and Paonia highlight the semifinals. Paonia outlasted Sanford and Dolores, and Custer County downed Holly and Rocky Ford. After squeaking past Kiowa 11-10, Jefferson Academy held off Calhan 5-3.

Class 1A

Surprises? There weren’t any as three of the top four teams advanced Saturday, a day after Caliche won its quarterfinal. Idalia tamed La Veta 16-2, Eads whipped Haxtun 14-1 and Granada topped Stratton 8-1.
