SAN DIEGO — In order to make room on the roster for rookie starter Greg Reynolds, the Colorado Rockies optioned pitcher Mark Redman to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Rockies players learned this morning that Redman would be removed as the team needed a spot for Reynolds, who will make his major league debut today against the San Diego Padres.

Because Redman has more than five years’ experience, he could refuse the assignment. However, he told the team at the end of spring training that he would agree to go to the minor leagues if it ever came to that. Manager Clint Hurdle said today that it was his understanding that Redman would report to the Sky Sox.

“I think for Mark to pitch up to his capabilities, he needs to be on a set schedule and pitch every fifth day,” Hurdle said. “And I don’t see that opportunity providing itself out of our bullpen right now. By going down there it puts him in a position to maximize his best role.”

Redman had struggled as a starter and was banished to the bullpen last week.

The Rockies finish their three-game series today against the Padres. They face Chris Young.

As expected, Matt Holliday is not in the starting lineup today. He’s getting his second day off of the season.
