A building in Boulder has been evacuated as a safety precaution over asbestos concerns after a fire raced through it early this morning.
Boulder firefighters were called at about 2:30 a.m. to a fire at 1821 22nd St., said Sarah Huntley, a city spokeswoman.
The fire was quickly put out, and there were no injuries. But concerns arose over asbestos used in the construction of the three-story, 31-unit building, Huntley said.
Seven units were damaged, four heavily, but the entire building remains evacuated today because of possible asbestos released into the air by the fire and the damage it caused, Huntley said.
The fire began in a juniper bush alongside the building. Investigators still are trying to determine what sparked the fire.
This afternoon, firefighters wearing protective gear went inside the apartments to collect “essential” possessions, such as wallets, purses and medications, for displaced residents.
Residents won’t be allowed back into the building until Tuesday at the earliest, Huntley said.
