Residents of Ordway met Monday night to learn how the government can help them put their homes and their lives back together after a wildfire last month.

A meeting at the town library helped explain the role of local, state and federal government and benevolent organizations since the April 15 blaze that burned 8,900 acres and 24 buildings, including eight homes.

The entire population of 1,200 was evacuated, as the wind-swept blaze roared through town.

Two volunteer firefighters died when a bridge collapsed from damage caused by the flames. Investigators said the fire started when a trash and hay fire had not been fully extinguished. They recommended against criminal charges, calling the fire accidental.

Residents said they wanted to meet so they could figure out who needs what kind of help and how to move forward.
