The airplane that crashed last week near Black Hawk went down because of mechanical problems in the engine, according to a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board.
The crash killed the pilot, Barry Maggert, 53, of Carbondale, and seriously injured the passenger, Jonathan Holton, 23.
Holton told investigators the engine started sputtering as they passed over the Eagle County Airport at 16,000 feet. Maggert tried adjusting the air/fuel mixture as they continued to fly east toward Boulder.
A short time after crossing over the Continental Divide, the aircraft began “nosing over” and finally crashed at 10,400 feet in the mountains about 4 miles west of Black Hawk.
