A 5-month-old child extricated from a deadly head-on collision in Grand Junction remains in fair condition at St. Mary’s Hospital.
The baby has been identified as Alexander Steele, said Samantha Moe, a spokeswoman for the hospital.
Both drivers died from injuries received in the incident at 1:23 p.m. Monday, caused by a minivan driving the wrong way on Interstate 70 on the west edge of Grand Junction.
The child was in a Red Chevrolet Monte Carlo that was eastbound on I-70 when it was hit head-on by the minivan heading west in the eastbound lanes.
Investigators estimated both vehicles were going more than 60 mph on impact.
The Mesa County Coroner’s Office identified the driver of the Monte Carlo as Jenny Trover, 26, of Fruita.
The driver of the minivan was identified as Kathryn Ann Disparti, 48, of Napa, Calif.
Both women died of multiple blunt-force injuries, the coroner’s office said.
Grand Junction police Officer T.J. Rix said the child suffered head trauma.
The eastbound lanes of I-70 were closed for about five hours after the accident, and traffic was detoured around the scene.
