Today, Maia Lewis is getting the wires off that have kept her jaws shut tight since she was run over by a semi on her bike a month ago.

But for the 9-year-old girl, Thursday’s surprise may have been even better. Denver police who investigated the accident gave her a shiny, new light-purple Schwinn — and a helmet, of course. “Cool! Awesome,” Maia said outside her northwest Denver home.

After thanking the officers, Detective Kyle Damrell and Sgt. Brian Conover, Maia promptly took her new ride for a ride. “Woo-hoo,” she shouted.

Maia is lucky, her family says.

She had darted out in the street that April afternoon on her bike, when a semi ran over her with its back wheels. Amazingly, she was in the hospital for only a week.

Police say no charges were filed against the driver.

Since the accident, Maia and her mother, Kimberli Lewis, have talked about what happened and what she’ll do with her new bike.

This time, Kimberli Lewis said, her daughter will be more careful.

“We’ve already discussed that,” she said.
