PUEBLO, Colo.—Adam Watts singled to right field in the seventh inning to send Taylor Reed home Saturday as the Eads Eagles won their second straight 1A state high school baseball championship 9-8 over Granada.
Eads (20-1) improved to 3-1 on the season against its district rival in a rematch of the 2007 1A title game.
The Eagles needed the rally after Granada (16-4) tied the game at 8-8 at the top of the seventh with freshman third baseman Mike Ortiz’s three-run double off Eads reliever Kevin Lindholm.
Reed got into scoring position after reaching on a fielder’s choice and stealing second base with one out. Hayden Uhland struck out and Watts hit the single off Granada starter Danny Morales.
Granada was aiming for its second consecutive come-from-behind victory in as many days after advancing to the title game with a 4-3 win over Caliche.
Lindholm came in with no outs in the top of the seventh and was 3-for-4 with three runs scored to earn the victory. Starting pitcher Kenan Gooden was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Eads led the game 6-4 through five innings, then added two insurance runs in the sixth on RBIs by Gooden and Austin Adamson. The Eagles had 16 hits on the day.
Morales pitched a complete game in the Granada loss and was 2-for-4 from the plate with a run scored.
