FORT WORTH, Texas — Behind discus champion Missy Faubus and a meet-high 26.25 points from Emily Pearson, the Colorado State women’s team Saturday won its first Mountain West Conference outdoor championship.

The Rams finished with 187 points, 46 points better than BYU. The Cougars won the men’s title for the ninth consecutive year, getting 210 points; CSU was fourth at 126.

Faubus’ throw of 168 feet, 5 inches also qualified her for the NCAA regionals. CSU’s Kristen Hemphill won the 5,000 meters in 17 minutes, 32.14 seconds — 5 seconds ahead of New Mexico’s Kara Henry. Hemphill was second Friday in the steeplechase.

“I don’t know if we could have had a more perfect meet,” said CSU coach Brian Bedard, who was named women’s coach of the year. “We scored everywhere we were supposed to, and then some. When that happens, it’s really special.”

Pearson was second in the heptathlon, javelin and the 100 meters and also ran legs on the 400 relay (finished fourth) and the 1,600 relay (finished fifth).

The Rams will next compete at the regionals in Nebraska in two weeks.
