Goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul will miss at least five games for the Rapids after he was chosen to represent his native Senegal in its bid to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Coundoul, 26, will join the Lions of Teranga after the Rapids host Chivas USA on Saturday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, and coach Fernando Clavijo does not expect him to return until after June 22.

Coundoul, who is in his second season as Colorado’s No. 1 keeper, will miss Major League Soccer games against FC Dallas, Los Angeles Galaxy, Toronto FC and Houston Dynamo, in addition to a U.S. Open Cup qualifier against the Galaxy.

Backup goalie Justin Hughes remains out with a groin injury, which would currently put third-stringer Chris Sharpe of Australia at the top of the pecking order.

Coundoul played in Senegal’s final match of the African Nations Cup during the winter and has since been tapped to play regularly for the team. Senegal shares the Confederation of African Football Group 6 with Algeria, Liberia and Gambia.

Wyoming signs Auburn transfer.

The University of Wyoming men’s basketball team has signed Boubacar Sylla to a scholarship offer.

Sylla, a 7-foot-2, 275-pound center with a 7-5 wingspan, comes to Wyoming with three years of eligibility after playing last season at Auburn.

Sylla saw action in only three games last season at Auburn. He earlier played on a Stoneridge Prep team in Simi Valley, Calif., that was ranked No. 14 in the nation in 2006-07 among all prep schools. Sylla also was reportedly recruited by LSU and USC.

Sylla will be able to practice with the Cowboys, but will have to sit out a season of competition in the 2008-09 season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules.
