How ’bout them Rockies!

What’s that? Yeah, you’re right, let’s talk some Broncos.

We told you the other day about the Broncos being ranked No. 23 in ‘s latest NFL power rankings. It was a number that didn’t escape Mike Shanahan’s eye.

When I asked him about it Thursday, Shanahan laid another number on me: 45.

That’s how many games the Broncos have won in the four seasons in which had them ranked before the season outside the top 10 teams in the league.

For the liberal-arts majors in the crowd, that’s about 11 wins a season. Can this year’s Broncos win that many? Sure. I’m not convinced they will, but they could.

The Broncos loom as a mystery team. They could break out after back-to-back seasons without a playoff appearance, or, given a key injury or two, they could fall apart.

There are so many variables, so many young players on the rise and veterans returning from injuries, it’s hard to say where the Broncos of 2008 are headed.

But know this about the Broncos: Their head coach is very confident they’re going to bounce back.
