An elderly couple were killed Wednesday when their car rolled down an embankment and landed upside down in the Arkansas River near Pinnacle Rock Recreational Area west of Cañon City, authorities say.

Their identities have not been released pending notification of their family, said Trooper Brandon Wilkins of the Colorado State Patrol.

The couple were in a 2004 Buick driving west on U.S. 50 at 3:30 p.m. when the car drifted to the right and rolled into the river, Wilkins said.

Officials pulled the Buick out using two cables. Local river guides helped.
