The Phillies are baseball’s monster mashers. Chase Utley hit a three-run homer in the first, and Chris Coste added a three-run shot in the sixth, giving Philadelphia 77 homers this season, tops in the majors.
The Rockies, by contrast, have hit 37. Of course, playing at homer-friendly Citizens Bank Park obviously helps the Phillies. In April, the coldest month of the season, they slugged 39 homers, shattering the club mark of 29, set in April 2006.
Error, Herrera.
Manager Clint Hurdle “Gowdy-ed” second baseman Jonathan Herrera.
Prior to the game, Hurdle heaped praise on Herrera for his slick fielding, only to see Herrera get handcuffed by Utley’s sharp grounder in the third. The error led to an unearned Phillies’ run.
According to Hurdle, getting “Gowdy-ed” refers to the late, great broadcaster Curt Gowdy, who had a penchant for lavishly praising athletes, only to see them goof shortly thereafter.
