ASPEN, Colo.—Aspen-area school children don’t learn just about looking both ways before they cross the street or not to talk to strangers. They also get lessons about the hazards of bears.
State wildlife officers told the children how to react when they see bears and how to try to discourage them from coming around. They urged children to make sure that trash cans around their homes are locked up.
The Aspen area was besieged by bears last year as the bruins dug through trash cans and invaded homes looking for food after a spring freeze and then drought wiped out much of their natural fare.
Bears are usually the losers when they tangle with people. Last year, the Division of Wildlife killed a record 59 bears that threatened people or had to be moved more than once.
