WINDSOR, Colo.—Only four days after a tornado devastated their town, residents of Windsor held a 65th annual Memorial Day service Monday.
Windsor Mayor John Vazquez thanked volunteers, among them Boy Scouts, who removed debris and righted headstones at Lakeview Cemetery in time for the service.
Vazquez said the service was part of the community’s healing process.
A Color Guard organized by the local American Legion fired guns in salute during the event. A Boy Scout played Taps, and resident Lori Camerer, whose home was destroyed by the storm, sang the national anthem.
Before the service, Scouts placed an American flag on each of the 253 veterans’ graves at Lakeview Cemetery.
Killed by Thursday’s tornado was Oscar Manchester, 52, a U.S. Marine and Vietnam veteran and former employee of the Denver Newspaper Agency.
