He pulled a Tony Stewart, but with a better attitude. Before the irritable Stewart blew a tire with three laps to go in Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600, Vickers was the class of the field before having a wheel and tire fly off his chassis. Vickers led 61 of 184 laps before retiring — with his left rear wheel stopping at an infield campsite. A year ago in this race, Vickers led 74 laps before finishing fifth.
“It’s so frustrating to have had a car that could have won this race two years in a row now,” Vickers said.
Vickers had a bad vibe he was losing a tire.
“One lap it started vibrating, and a couple guys were able to pass me, then the next lap it just completely came off,” he said. “We were obviously the fastest car on the race track.”
