JERUSALEM — After a contest that ruffled a few feathers, Israel has chosen its national bird.

At a ceremony in Jerusalem on Thursday, Israeli President Shimon Peres announced that the hoopoe, identified by its long beak and red and black crest, is now the ornithological symbol of the country.

In a nationwide vote, more than 150,000 Israelis cast ballots for one of 10 native birds, according to the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel.
