One of the drivers in a fatal head-on collision in Larimer County on Saturday is suspected of being stoned and has been charged with vehicular homicide and drug possession, according to officials.

Gregory P. Nessler, 20, of Fort Collins was driving south in white 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche when he crossed into the northbound lane of Highway 287 and slammed into a gold 2002 Toyota, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The Larimer County coroner pronounced a passenger in the Toyota, Christopher E. Douglas, 28, of Lisbon, Maine, dead at the scene.

“Drugs are suspected as contributing factors on the part of the driver of the Chevy Avalanche,” according to a State Patrol release.

Nessler sustained minor injuries and was taken to Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins.

The driver of the Toyota, Amy V. White, 24, of Denver was taken to Poudre Valley Hospital with serious injuries.

Tyler Santomaso, 20, of Fort Collins was riding with Nessler. He sustained minor injuries and was also taken to Poudre Valley.

Highway 287 was closed for about four hours while the crash was investigated.

Everyone involved in the crash was wearing seat belts.
