Getting your player ready...

A baseball whirlwind threatened to sweep Andy Burns off his feet, but the Rocky Mountain High School graduate stayed grounded. Now he’s made one of the biggest decisions of his young life.

Burns said Monday unless he is picked in the first round of Thursday’s amateur draft, he’ll put his professional baseball career on hold and attend the University of Kentucky in the fall.

“The chances of me getting picked as one of the top 30 players are slim to none, and that’s fine. I’ve always wanted to play college ball,” Burns said from Duluth, Minn., where he’s playing for the Duluth Huskies of the Northwoods League. “Now I’ll get my education, and if I play well and get better, I can be a first-round pick later.”

The Lobos shortstop hit .481 with 10 homers this season, leading Rocky Mountain to back-to- back Class 5A state titles.
