Turbulent spring weather is rocking the Eastern Plains tonight, with forecasters fretting that tornadoes could still form by midnight.

A tornado warning is in effect for eastern Adams and Washington counties, with Doppler radar showing atmospheric conditions ripe for a twister, but none reported on the ground as of 9:30 p.m. Quarter-sized hail pelted an area north of Aurora at dusk, according to the National Weather Service Office in Boulder.

Severe thunderstorms are raking eastern and southern portions of Arapahoe and Weld counties, according to the Weather Service. Earlier in the evening, Kit Carson County was under a severe storm warming.

Colorado averages about 60 tornadoes a year, with about 40 percent of those coming in June, according to the Weather Service. Tornadoes are likeliest between from mid-May through mid-August. Weld and Adams counties lead the state in the highest frequencies of tornadoes in the United States.
