The city manager of Durango has selected David Felice as chief of police, the city announced today.
Felice still needs the OK from City Council, which will meet June 16 to consider the confirmation.
City Manager Ron LeBlanc said in a news release that Felice will bring confidence to the department.
“The chief of police is a critically important position,” he said. “The chief must be able to balance the community standards with fair and impartial application of the law. I believe David possesses the leadership qualities to maintain the high standards in our police department …”
The position opened after former Chief Al Bell retired in April. He served 14 years in the top position.
Felice was chosen from 65 applicants. He is the deputy chief of police in the Patrol Operations Bureau in Colorado Springs. He has been with the department since 1980.
He said in a statement that he was honored to be considered for the position.
“I am looking forward to working in such a great police department and serving the Durango community,” he said.
