The National High School Coaches Association on Saturday named two Colorado coaches as national coaches of the year: Warren Mitchell, the boys track and field coach at Limon High School, and Dick Katte, the boys basketball coach at Denver Christian.
The 85-year-old Mitchell just completed his 55th season as track coach, and also coached football for 37 years. Katte, 71, in February became the 10th active coach in the nation with 800 victories.
Colorado riders headed to Italy.
USA Cycling announced its team for the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships, which are July 15-22 in Val di Sole, Italy, and Colorado is well-represented.
Competing in elite men’s cross country will be Todd Wells of Durango, Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski of Boulder and Sam Schultz of Colorado Springs.
Heather Irmiger of Boulder and Kelli Emmett of Colorado Springs will compete in the elite women’s cross country event. Racing in elite men’s downhill will be Cole Bangert of Twin Lakes and Kain Leonard and Lars Steinberg of Gunnison.
Ross Milan of Golden will race in the elite men’s 4-cross, and Neven Steinmetz of Boulder will do the elite women’s 4-cross. Jessica Vogt of Boulder declined an invitation to race.
Competing in the junior men’s downhill will be Joseph Schusler of Boulder, Taylor Borucki of Durango and Dustin Belcher of Carbondale.
