COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Colorado Springs police are investigating the cause of a two-vehicle crash that killed an airman assigned to Peterson Air Force Base.

The victim is being identified as 28-year-old Staff Sgt. Jorge Barba. Authorities say he died about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday when the Volkswagen Jetta he was driving was hit broadside by a Ford van.

Barba died at the scene. The other driver was injured, but the nature and extent of the injuries is not known.

The Colorado State Patrol says Barba was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, but the driver’s side of the Jetta suffered extensive damage when it was T-boned.

Barba was a dental laboratory journeyman with the 21st Dental Squadron at Peterson.

The name of the van driver has not been released.
