Tune in to “Fitting In.” A year ago, Stephanie Riggs held a casting call for local children who wanted to improve their health. Concerned about the rise in childhood obesity and the problems it causes for kids, she devised a program in which the youths would work with a variety of coaches to get exercise, learn to make nutritious food choices and build confidence in themselves. The resulting program, “Fitting In,” airs 7-8 a.m. Saturday on ABC Family (Denver Comcast channel 33). Riggs, a former KCNC Channel 4 anchor who produced and hosts the show, said from the outset that unlike other reality weight-loss programs, “there will be no scales, no elimination and no losers.” (Riggs is shown at left with participant Chelsea Hodges, 10. ) Among those enlisted to work with the children and their families were Julie Hammerstein, a nutritionist; Theresa Byrne, an owner and program director at United Martial Arts Center; Chris Anthony, an extreme skier; and Dr. Reginald Washington, a children’s heart specialist in Denver who has chaired the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Committee on Sports Medicine and Fitness, and co-chairs its national task force on obesity.
